Road Bikes

Road biking is something that most of our staff at Bikesport enjoys.  We lead road rides weekly, but there is also always someone looking to go for a ride.  We carry many different road bikes, but a road bike is a personal investment.  When buying a road bike, we advise you to be fitted by one of our fitting experts to ensure that the bike is customized exactly to your body.  The smallest adjustments on a road bike can make your ride terribly uncomfortable, but the opposite adjustment will make you feel like you're flying.  If you're considering a road bike, please come talk to one of our road bike experts.
If you're a master road racer, we can also accomodate you.  Remember, we were cylists before we were bike shop owners!  We always love to meet fellow road enthusiasts!

Why choose a Carbon Fiber bike?
Carbon Fiber is a lightweight, strong, and absorbent material that makes
cycling buttery smooth!  The strength of the carbon frame makes the bike
stiff, rather than having flex like some other materials like aluminum.  This
equates to a better transfer of your muscle strength directly to the pedals for
a very controlled feeling both on flats and especially on hill climbing.  You will
definitely climb hills much easier once you switch to carbon.

Can't afford a Carbon Fiber bike?
All Trek aluminum frame bikes now come standard with a Carbon Fiber Front Fork and seatpost.  As you go up in price, you are paying for better quality aluminum frame and parts, as well as more carbon on the bike, like the rear chainstay (fork).  Having carbon on your aluminum bike improves the ride considerably over bikes that do not have carbon.

What is the difference between a triple chainring and a compact double chainring?  How will this affect my riding?
A triple chainring offers more usable gears and is great for the rider who
knows he will rely on the small chainring (granny gear) to explore hills that
are difficult.  Often a new road cyclist will choose this option since he or she
doesn't want to be unprepared while learning to attack hills.  Other riders who might choose the triple chainring might be experienced but only riding occasionally, older riders who know the hills around here are killers, or anyone who wants the security of the small ring while attempting unfamiliar terrain.

The compact double offers decreased weight on the bike, less shifting problems over the life of the bike, and less wear and tear on the chain and parts.  The double chainring became remanufactured as the "compact double" a few years ago when it was found that, by changing the ring sizes, bike companies could offer to the consumer a larger number of usable gears than the standard "double" offered.  You really only sacrifice one large gear and two small gears (on a 10-speed rear), even though you've given up the granny gear in the front.  More of your riding utitlizes the large gear up front, leading to stronger riding skills and higher cadence abilities.  With newer and lighter bikes made of carbon fiber or titanium, making your switch to the compact double is a smart choice.

The following are a few featured Road bike designs from Trek:

1.2

The 1 Series is designed for the road enthusiast on a budget.  The 1.2
utilizes carbon fiber fork and seatpost.
The Compact model has only two gears in the front, compacting 27 speeds into 18 with adjusted chain rings.

WSD (Women's Specific Design)

As Trek says, "He wouldn't wear your bathing suit, why should you ride his bike?"
Although a WSD (or Women's Specific Design) isn't necessary for all types of riding, it can make a world of difference for serious or long distance road riders and racers.  Women are just built different.
Seen here is the madone 5.1.  The 5.1 features an OCLA black carbon frame in addition to the WSD geometry. It is light and responsive which makes it perfect for riding fast on the road!
